Sun Dance

SUN DANCE by Sophie Lavoie

Sun Dance is from a place down the road near picturesque Peggy's Cove, one of the most popular destinations in Nova Scotia.

Seaweeds outside of the water lay flat and limp having evolved in an environment where the water supports them, the effect of gravity not the same beneath the waves. Underwater these plants are transformed into glorious, flexible dancers, ever reaching for Sun's light.

The ebb and flow of the tide push and pull these graceful fronds, arching and stretching, all moving with Ocean's breath. Here the sea floor dives, and upwelling currents rush to lift and whip the kelp like waving flags in blowing winds.

Light travels through water unlike it does above, sun beams reach down to the kelp, this moving canvas reveals an undulating dance between light and shadow.

In moving blue,
black lies and stands,
warm brown bending.
Red appears
and orange ripples,
stripes of shadow run
Yellow bright
and white alight,
the sun is dancing.
